A Few Of The Strange IPv6 Behaviors Waiting Inside

  • The IPv6 host that receives only a /64 network prefix from a Router Advertisement, then creates the rest of its address automatically from its MAC address using EUI-64. (If the router never assigns the complete address, where does the interface identifier come from?)
  • The IPv6 interface that receives a global unicast address through SLAAC, even though no global address was manually configured. (Which RA flags allow the host to configure itself automatically?)
  • The Router Advertisement that contains the M, O, and A flags, each pointing the host toward a different address configuration method. (Does an RA force the host to use DHCPv6 or SLAAC, or does it simply provide instructions?)
  • The DHCPv6 client that sends its SOLICIT message to FF02::1:2, but the message never reaches a server on another subnet. (Why can’t an IPv6 router forward this multicast packet to the DHCPv6 server?)

  2. Import the EVE-NG OVA.
  3. Open the first IPv6 workbook.
  4. Read the objective before touching the configuration.
  5. Configure the routers and run the verification commands.
  6. Compare what you expected IPv6 to do with what actually happened.
  7. Use the Save Config files when you want to inspect the completed state or check your own work.
  8. Open the Blank Lab file, change one condition, and run the scenario again.
