You Can’t Route With Theory

X factors distinguish the average engineer from the few who actually control networks in production. We used to think there was just a small gap between what people learn in certification paths and what they face in real networks. In study mode, “understanding” counts for something; in real networks, it counts for nothing. Only behavior matters.

In a study environment, instructors and courses are structured to reward comprehension. “You understand BGP best path, that’s what matters.” But it’s not what matters. Engineers are now conditioned to explain instead of execute:

“I understand local preference.”

“I know how MED works.”

“I studied route reflectors…”

“I read the RFC…”

And then they expect that knowledge to translate into real control. Many who fail to make that transition become frustrated, confused, and stuck — especially when they see others solving problems faster with less visible effort.

In real networks, understanding alone gets you nowhere. A network that “should work” but doesn’t will not reward your explanations. A broken BGP session doesn’t care how well you can describe it. Real environments reward one thing and one thing only: the ability to configure, verify, break, and fix behavior.

Most engineers approach BGP this way. They BELIEVE they are progressing because they studied it. Reread those last few paragraphs — real networks don’t care about your notes or your understanding — they require you to make things work. How To Use This System For Real Progress

First, execute the entire lab from start to finish. Follow every step, complete the configuration, verify the behavior, and understand why each part works the way it does. Don’t just observe — execute. The goal is not partial progress. The goal is a complete, working scenario you can reproduce without guidance.

Second, do not treat the workbook as something you “go through once.” Each lab must be repeated until you can rebuild the entire scenario from memory, without looking at the workbook. If you cannot do that, you have not mastered the lab.

Third, do not move forward with the mindset of “I’ll come back later.” Later does not exist. If you move forward without mastering the current lab, every next lab will feel heavier, more confusing, and eventually frustrating. This is exactly where most engineers get stuck.

Fourth, repeat and rebuild. Run labs again, change variables, break scenarios intentionally, and observe behavior. Real understanding comes from repetition under variation, not from single exposure.
